Kevin Grossnicklaus Designing Extensible Applications in .NET
Kevin Grossnicklaus is a software architect with over 10 years experience designing and writing custom software throughout a number of industries. He is currently the Application Development Practice Leader for SSE where he is responsible for assisting development teams in designing, architecting, and building enterprise scale, distributed applications built on the Microsoft .NET platform.
Kevin is also an instructor at the Center for the Application of Information Technology (CAIT) at Washington University in St. Louis. At CAIT, Kevin provides training and mentoring on Microsoft .NET technologies to students from Boeing, Anheuser-Busch, and many other of St. Louis’ Fortune 500 companies.
With the large number of new frameworks and components available to .NET developers today, it is becoming much more difficult to decide which tools to use when designing applications for extensibility. This presentation will cover three of the primary options you should consider:
- Add-ins via the System.AddIn namespace
- The Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF)
- Direct Injection Containers (DI) such as Unity or Windsor
If you have never heard of any of these technologies or would just like to know more about them then this presentation is for you.

St. Louis' Day of .NET is a one day technical conference being held on Saturday, December 13th, 2008 and providing over 20 highly technical sessions covering some of the most relavent .NET topics today.
As Microsoft releases new technologies into the marketplace via their national conferences such as Tech-Ed or the Professional Developers Conference (PDC), many local developers and technologists are caught behind the curve by not being able to attend these national events on a regular basis. To help bridge the gap between the topics and content presented at these events and local developers, Microsoft is working with the local St. Louis .NET developer community to host the St. Louis Day of .NET conference. This conference will give local developers the opportunity to see some of the same sessions provided at the national events as well as experience some of the newest technologies such as Windows 7.
The Day of .NET conference will include sessions covering:
- Microsoft Windows 7
- Windows Azure and Microsoft's "Cloud Computing" Initiative
- Silverlight
- SharePoint
- Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
- Distributed Caching using Microsoft "Velocity"
- The future of C#
- SQL Server 2008
For a complete list of currently scheduled sessions, please click here.
In addition to the great sessions by some of the areas leading presenters, attendees will have the opportunity to win one of many great prizes provided by Microsoft and many of the other conference sponsors. Don't miss this opportunity to attend and network with your peers and coworkers while staying abreast of the most cutting edge technologies during a time of rapid change. |

Just turn on the news at 5pm and unfortunately there is a lot of gloom and doom discussion when it comes to the St. Louis job market. All industries have been affected. As we all know, Information Technology exists in every corporation at some level, so our local IT professionals have definitely been affected. It raises the questions: Is anyone in St. Louis hiring IT professionals? What local companies are growing and stable? Do I have the technical skills that fit their technology environment? How can I find out?
To find out the answers to all of the above, take a look at local consulting and/or recruiting firms for help! Local St. Louis employers, who are growing, are stable and looking for quality employees/consultants are utilizing experts in the field to fill their staffing needs. Recruiting/ Consulting firms need qualified IT professionals to present to their client base!
Staffing/Consulting firms regularly have access to positions within a company that you will never be able to access on your own. Most of the growing corporations in St. Louis utilize a “Vendor Mangement” system, which allows only a select group of staffing/consulting firms to fill their openings for top IT talent! What does this mean to you? You need a friend in the business to “sell” your resume to the right opportunity, which will ultimately land you with the right employer.
Worried about the stability of “staff augmentation” or “consulting / contracting” roles! Don’t be! Get informed. You will quickly find out that local employers utilize staffing/consulting firms on a regular basis to fill on-going and right to hire roles within their organization that are not published or advertised in any other manner.
With our specific client base at iBridge, I can tell you that our business model and clients demand that we hire full time, salaried, fully benefited employees to fill 2-5 year + staff augmentation roles, of which 90% are right to hire.
To learn more, contact your favorite local recruiter or me!

Jeff Fattic Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Exposed
Most statistical organizations estimate the historical rate of software development project success at 33%! What factors contribute to this? Poor requirements, lack of formal process, insufficient testing, insufficient training, and much more! Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) is the combination of formal process and specialized tools used to make software development projects more successful. While it requires some additional effort and investment, it can help your development department get to market quicker, meet governance criteria, improve quality, meet and beat budgets and schedules. In this discussion, I hope to show you how to use Visual Studio Team System to cover many of the aspects of Visual Studio Team System.
Jeff Fattic is the Technical Team Lead in the Quilogy Development Center. He has been working with Visual Studio Team System and ALM for close to four years. Jeff works with Microsoft as one of their Virtual Technology Specialists for Dev Tools. When not working with or presenting on Visual Studio Team System 2010 (in the Microsoft TAP) or ALM, he dives into .NET 3.0/3.5 topics like WPF, WCF, and Workflow. Also, he works closely with Microsoft to help evangelize .NET 3.0/3.5. Jeff has traveled to Warsaw, Poland and Paris, France to work with Microsoft and train ISV's on MOSS after participating in the MOSS TAP program. After recently designing a "PDF-killer" solution, he is completing a case study to showcase the advantages of OpenXML and XPS documents.
